Easter week end fishing

We received this lovely note from Sofie along with pictures of her week end!  ( Check out Louie’s reply !)

“”Hi,

Spring is here and so is fishing season.

Here is a picture of me (Sofie) and another of me and a friend, Abby. She gets to hike with me time to time. We get along really well, chasing each other in the woods and enjoying quiet time when dad fishes. Everyone has a 7+ kilometer that day and for 2 other days of the Easter Weekend. Dad didn’t take pictures of the other days. For some reason Dad didn’t get any fish, maybe they were too busy running away from the fur balls wading in the lake? Oh well, we all had fun and lots of fresh air.

Love Sofie “”Sofie fishing

Louie replied:

“”Hello Sofie,

looks like you had a fun week end  with your friend and dad.  I went to a show with mom, met all kinds of dogs and people and some of them petted me senseless !!!!  People at the show remember you and said I am starting to run as nicely as you did .  You made a lasting impression!

I had lots of treats ( the only reason why I put up with this show business !)  and mom was really happy with me, the German lady judge even thanked her for bringing her an all natural dog! ; I will show you my picture when it arrives.

In the meantime mom said she will put you on the cover of the website,

love, your bro Louie””

Will winter ever end ??

This past week has seen everything !  Beautiful sunny days and 10°C, green grass sprouting, I have not looked but likely the garlic might have thought this was it  too.

Then on wednesday the skies opened and 50 cm of snow covered everything to add good measure lets add some hurricane force winds.  What a mess!  Well, it has been raining for 2 days now, it has all gone away and we will pretend, once more that spring is coming !!

In the meantime I have been busy… studying;  the dogs happily find their sweet spot, slip into a  semi comatose state until some extraordinary event, like a pheasant crossing the yard, pulls them out of their stupor!

On the week end I also met a very famous person!   Dr Jean Dodds whose work in the area of thyroid gland issues and vaccines is recognized world wide.  She spent 2 days in Halifax sharing her knowledge! Jean DoddsShe is truly passionate and enthusiastic about her work.  She graduated in 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College !  Happy anniversary !

Happy St Patrick’s day !

2009 03 19 016

Today 5 years ago, Lia started her labour just an hour after I had left for a meeting in Toronto; I was about an hour and a half away .  I quickly dealt with the meeting and drove back, my girl had delivered 2 boys and a girl and we knew there were two more to come.  As my friend went to the vet to get some oxytocin, Lia had a big contraction and here was Ciara, being born feet first in my hand.  After we quickly cleaned her up and weight her and put on a dandy little purple collar, Lia looked after her.  But Lia was exhausted and had decided that she was done, and knowing that there was still another puppy we brought her to the vet where she delivered big boy Beamish.  it does not seem so long ago and Ciara is still my little girl with soulful eyes!

Heartbreak

Last month we were looking forward to Lia much anticipated breeding with Schweitzer and we were spending a quiet month waiting to confirm the pregnancy by ultrasound.  Unfortunately mother nature had other design; Lia was pregnant but a puppy died and instead of simply being reabsorbed as it would normally occur, it became toxic and provoked a miscarriage.  Lia got very sick very quickly and we were very worried about her. After much anguish and a delicate surgery, Lia is recuperating and although heartbroken, she is doing better every day.  She even started going for her walks again today.

Here is Lia, a little fuzzy sporting her very elegant IV shunt bandaged with a little fire hydrant clip. A pregnancy is always a voyage of hope and anticipated joy, and very seldom does it lead to heartbreak for both us and Lia.  She grieves the loss of her puppies and I am still sometimes surprised by the intensity of their emotions.  She has a good cry now and again, but time will heal her.  Hopefully her daughter will have babies soon and she will be able to be a second mom to them.

For everyone who were expecting a puppy, we will soon put information on the next breeding .

January 2014 – and now we wait !

Well it has been a busy month ! I took a quick trip to Montreal to visit family, always chancy at this time of year, and to add to the excitement Ciara came in season.  I was expecting Lia to follow suit in a month or so but she also came in season 5 days later. So our breeding schedule got going and she was bred on the week end.  Now comes the longest period of the pregnancy, waiting the 28 days to see if she is pregnant.

Lia waiting

Contrary to humans, dogs hormones do not change if they become pregnant, there is nothing to measure, so we have to wait.  After fertilization the forming puppies will free float in the uterus for 17 days before implanting in the uterine wall and start forming a placenta, so we give it another 10 days and when performing an ultrasound we can then see the placentas and puppies in their amniotic sacs.

So we wait ! Lia does not mind playing princess while we wait !

I also have been busy taking classes; last summer I took a class from the University of Minnesota in Canine Reproduction these are called MOOCs ( Massive Open Online Courses) see Duncan McCue’s piece on CBC .  I enjoyed it very much and I have been taking different courses since.  This term I am taking the second term of genetics, which is fascinating but also a lot of work.  Here is my professor Rosie Redfield  ( also featured in Duncan Mc Cue’s piece) from the University of British Columbia, she is fabulous and .. very colorful !  Genetics is very much a love it or hate it subject. Fortunately I love it and it is a useful piece of knowledge to have for breeding better dogs !!Rosie Redfield

So, for those wondering what I have been up to, as there has been few updates, now you know 😉 .

I am planning on taking Louie to the Halifax show in a few weeks, weather permitting as it has, along with the rest of the country been pretty wild around here; we even had all 4 seasons in one day !

I will post updates on Lia’s pregnancy as we go !
